Even in Canada, recipients of the defective hip implants from DePuy Orthopaedics are enraged. The metal-on-metal hip implants, specifically the ASR XL Acetabular System and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System, are currently the subject of major scrutiny in Quebec because of their high failure rate of around 13%. New Brunswick, NJ: A Johnson and Johnson's orthopedics subdivision, DePuy Orthopedics, is recalling hip replacement parts used by about 93,000 people worldwide.

Patients do not need their DePuy hip replacements removed as a result of a recall, but are being advised by the company to visit surgeons who will evaluate the device.

According to the company, very few of these hip devices are still on the market, as they were discontinued last year, reports the news source.

Specifically, the parts that are being recalled are the ASR XL Acetabular System, the cup portion of a replacement joint and the ASR Hip Resurfacing System.

The recall was spurred by data that showed a hip revision surgery rate of about 13 percent for those with the ASR XL system and of about 12 percent for those with the ASR resurfacing system, reports the news provider.
